Family Portraits Session With The Merrick Family At Goddard Park

Fun, laughter, and spontaneity - most family portraits that I have shot are a perfect mix of all these elements. And well, that’s how I prefer them too! I try not to restrict myself to only the posed shots when it comes to family sessions. I focus on making my models look naturally cheerful, in the moment, and connected. The aim is to show that genuine family bonding that tends to get lost in the posed photos sometimes. However, let me tell you this - family portrait sessions are about a lot more than just fun, and in reality, it can get challenging to get those images that I had added to my shot list. From working with kids who might not like the company of a stranger to capturing those fleeting moments when everyone comes together, these sessions are all about patience and perfect timing. Here’s a little snippet of my experience with the Merrick family.

A Family Portraits Session With The Merrick Family

The Merrick family is a cheerful lot of four - two young boys of almost the same age and the parents. Kids can be a bundle of joy and happiness, but at the same time, it can get a little challenging to get them to stand still for photos. And even though the Merrick boys brought all of their energy reserves with them, once we connected, it was a breeze to get them to give me their best poses! This is usually always my go-to step when I want to connect with the kids.

Instead of getting them to stand still and listen to my cues, initially, I try to simply let kids be kids.

The Merrick boys were super playful, and they actually couldn’t wait to beat each other up! So, as their photographer, I encouraged them to do that. And needless to say, no kids were hurt in the making of these family photos! I focused on taking their pictures as they ran and jumped around and teased each other as brothers do. This is just what I have in mind when I do family sessions. For me, these sessions are all about highlighting the authentic family love and bond. Once everyone is comfortable, and they can be themselves in my presence, that’s when those priceless candid moments start flowing naturally.

The location was just perfect for the photos as well. From the water to the lush greenery, I incorporated some pretty, natural backdrops in the photos, and honestly, it was an ideal setting for family portraits. The boys got to play around till they were tired. The Merrick family boys actually reminded me of my own two boys, who are also quite a handful. It was a delight to photograph and watch the whole family enjoy the moment and not worry about me being there or how their photos would turn out.
